A Heartwarming Journey of Compassion and Love
Life often brings unexpected tragedies, but sometimes, those heartbreaks can lead to truly inspiring journeys. Steve Greig, a retired animal lover, turned his grief into a beautiful mission to save and care for senior dogs in need.

Steve’s life took a dramatic turn when his beloved dog, Wolfgang, tragically passed away in a car accident. Devastated by the loss, Steve found himself searching for a way to honor Wolfgang’s memory. That’s when he decided to adopt the oldest senior dog at his local shelter. This simple yet profound act of kindness marked the beginning of a journey that would forever change his life.

The dog he adopted was Eeyore, an elderly Chihuahua who had been overlooked by many due to his age. On the drive home, something magical happened—Eeyore climbed onto Steve’s lap and stuck his head out of the window, basking in the joy of his newfound freedom. In that moment, Steve realized the power of his decision. He said, “The impact was so great it was the reason I didn’t just stop with that adoption and why I continue to adopt seniors today.”
Since that day, Steve has opened his heart and home to more senior dogs than he can count. Today, he cares for ten senior dogs alongside a turkey, a pig, and a chicken—an unconventional yet loving family. His commitment to these animals, many of whom are in their twilight years, is a testament to his incredible compassion.

Reflecting on his journey, Steve shared how his first adoption helped him process his grief. “I struggled for months to make sense of the tragedy of losing Wolfgang. Once I realized that giving another dog a chance at life was the best way to honor him, there was no looking back.”

Steve’s dedication to his senior dogs goes beyond simple care; it extends to providing them with the love and medical attention they need. Over the years, he has spent countless hours comforting his pets during their health challenges.
From accompanying Phyllis to her weekly chemotherapy treatments to holding Edna for IV fluids and driving Melvin to a heart specialist 45 miles away, Steve’s love knows no bounds.

While the journey hasn’t been without its emotional challenges, Steve has learned to focus on the joy these animals bring rather than the sadness of their eventual passing.
“It always hurts when they pass, but I’ve learned to appreciate the time we had together instead of being consumed by the pain of losing them,” he said.

Steve also shared advice for those considering adopting senior pets but feeling hesitant. For those worried about health costs, he recommends looking into pet insurance or fostering through shelters, as most foster programs cover veterinary expenses. For those concerned about the emotional toll, Steve encourages taking a leap of faith.
“Life’s best moments often come from choices that aren’t easy or self-protective. When we put the needs of others first, it opens the door to incredible joy.”
Steve’s story is a reminder that every animal, no matter how old or overlooked, deserves love and a chance at happiness. His journey with senior dogs is not just about giving them a home—it’s about creating a legacy of compassion, one paw at a time.
